"Help During Uncertain Times"

Devotion - January 9, 2009 - Dr. Joe Savage

Instead of starting the new year off with great hope and anticipation, many of you are starting it off with fear and worry. The economy. Your personal finances. Sickness. It seems for many the biggest concern is in the area of your work. I know many of you in the NFL are in the unknown.

The questions in our minds during uncertain times are endless. It seems like when one question gets answered another question . . . or two . . . or ten pops up!

When things are uncertain you must gravitate and hold onto what IS certain. Don't allow yourself to be blown and pushed around like an unmanned ship in the middle of a hurricane.  Don't allow the lack of direction and the uncertainty of the future to spiral you toward unbelief or self reliance.  Instead let it propel you toward a deeper reliance and dependence on God.

This is for certain: God isn't caught off guard by your current plight. He knew it was coming, He knows where you are, what you need, and where you are going.

One time Jesus got in a boat with His disciples and sent them directly into the path of a storm. With turbulent winds buffeting the sails and multiple foot waves pounding the hull, the men worked ferociously to keep the boat afloat. What was Jesus doing at the time? He was lying there asleep!

How and why would Jesus sleep during this storm?

I think it's because Jesus:  1) was not worried about a storm as He knew who was in charge; 2) He wanted to see how long it would take the guys to call on Him, and 3) He wanted to reveal His power over uncertainty (the waves) as a testimony to God.

Listen when faced with uncertainty we often do one of four things: 1) Rely more on self, 2) Rely more on others, 3) Quit, or 4) Rely more on God.

In the above mentioned storm, the disciples relied on each other and themselves at first.  Finally when things became really bad, they woke Jesus and call out to Him to save them. It was then that Jesus awoke, asked about their lack of faith, and then calmed the sea resulting in God receiving glory.

Uncertain times calls for us to grab onto that which is certain. Call on Jesus fervently and completely. Let Him receive glory though your uncertainty.

You can read today's story in Mark 4:35-41.

Today's Prayer
"Father, you know all things. You know where I am and what the future holds. I am thankful that my life and my family's life are in your hands. Now Father help me rely and look unto you instead of myself. You are the almighty. You are my strength. You are the one who can calm the sea. Oh God, I look to you to calm the sea. May you receive glory though my life. In Jesus' name. Amen."

NOTE: If I can be of any assistance or pray with you about anything, please do not hesitate to email or call me. Joe
