"NFL Draft Day Prayer & Instruction!"

Devotion for April 26, 2008
By: Dr. Joe Savage

The devotion today is written exclusively for our NFL readers.

Guys with the draft being today, I want to give you a word of instruction, a prayer, and a comment.

First, the instruction: "Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed" (Prov. 16:3). Commit the draft over the next two days to God. You will succeed.

Second, my prayer for you: "May He give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed" (Ps. 20:4). I sincerely pray this for you.

Third, the comment: "When you win, we plan to raise the roof and lead the parade with our banners. May all your wishes come true!" (Ps. 20:5 The Message). As a friend of Winners Influence, we sincerely celebrate with you as your wishes come true!

Today's Prayer

"Father, bless those who are reading this today that their plans may prosper and that you would grant them wisdom as they work to develop their team through the draft. Give them favor. Give them clarity. Give them influence. And Lord may they give you praise for answering this prayer. In the Lord's name. Amen."

"Take Notice!"

Devotion for April 17, 2008
By: Dr. Joe Savage

Sometimes in life we become so busy and so engrossed by life itself that we miss the majesty and greatness of God. I want to remind you to SEE life. Don't just live it.

This morning as I was praying and reading my Bible, I turned to Psalm 48 (a passage that I have read often, but never fully understood). Part of the passage says, "Go, inspect the city of Jerusalem. Walk around and count the many towers. Take note of the fortified walls, and tour all the citadels, that you may describe them to future generations.. For that is what God is like. He is our God forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die." (12-14). While you may not have a citadel, tower, or fortified wall, the principles are the same. The idea here is to SEE what God has done!

When one sees God and takes notice of who God really is and what He has done, then that person will operate from a stronger faith, a more appreciative heart, and a generally better perspective of life. It is when one sees the negativity of life and all her struggles that one becomes entangled and peace seems to vanish.

One of my favorite old hymns says:

"Count your blessings, name them one by one. Count your many blessings see what God has done."

Friend, you cannot count your blessings if you do not SEE His blessings and recognize them!

"Come and see the works of God; He is awesome!" (Psalm 66:5)

Today's Prayer

"Father, I admit that sometimes I pass by your blessings without seeing them. I sometimes get caught up by life and forget to see you and your incredible works. Forgive me for this and help me to do better. Help me to see you throughout life this day. Help me to really see YOU! I pray, in Jesus' name. Amen."

"Take Me Out to the Ball Game"

Devotion for April 3, 2008
By: Dr. Joe Savage

Note: The image to the right is a photo of the original lyrical version of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" produced in 1908.

The arrival of spring obviously brings the blooming of flowers, the budding of trees, the singing of birds, and the great ole sounds of baseball. This year baseball celebrates the 100th anniversary of the song "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." This old time favorite was written in 1908 by Jack Norworth, who while riding a subway train, was inspired by a sign that said "Baseball Today - Polo Grounds". He wrote the words on a scrap piece of paper and gave it to Albert Von Tilzer, who set the words to music. It took Norworth fifteen minutes to write the words. Interestingly both Norworth and Von Tilzer didn't see their first Major League Baseball games until 32 and 20 years later.

With the arrival of spring, let me make a suggestion. Before making the suggestion, let me say I know you are busy. I know for those of you in the NFL, that the draft is around the corner and time is of the essence. I know that you have more to do than time to do it.

But, listen to me. God has some things He wants you to enjoy. It is up to you if you enjoy them or not.

So with that let me suggest that you go out and baste in God's creation. Go enjoy it. Stop for a few minutes and actually see the intricacies and details of God's design. Stop and watch an ant hill being formed, a butterfly stirring, and bumble bee pollinating. Don't rush through life so fast that you forget God's majestic creation that He wants you to enjoy. Don't just pass by life without seeing it. Go and enjoy the outdoors. Go for a jog down a trail. Go hit some golf balls. Go pick flowers with your daughter. Go for a picnic with your family. Go take a ride through the country-side. Heck, go take someone out to the ball game and sing the great ole song while eating a hotdog and having a coca-cola. It's spring! Go enjoy God's creation!

Today's Prayer

"Father, thank you for all that you have created. Help me to enjoy the beauty and majesty that you surround me with. Help me to stop and to see your blessings. Help me to recognize your work. Help me to see life and to live life as you intended. In Jesus' name. Amen."
